Preparing for Your Stairlift | Frequently Asked Questions
Which Type of Stairlift I Need?
The type of stairlift you need depends on the shape and size of your staircase. Here are the options:
- Straight Stairlifts: Ideal for stairs that go straight up without any bends or turns.
- Curved Stairlifts: Suitable for stairs with bends, turns, half-landings, or corners.
- Compact Stairlifts: Perfect for narrow stairs, hallways, or landings.
If you’re unsure which type of stairlift is right for you, you can arrange for a FREE home assessment.
The difference between a curved stairlift and a straight stairlift?
The price of a stairlift can vary based on its style, make, and model. According to a 2020 survey byWhich? magazine, the average cost of a stairlift in the UK was £3,867. At MK Stairlifts, we ensure competitive pricing and provide a price promise to beat any like-for-like written quotation.
What is the Space Requirement for a Stairlift?
The space occupied by a stairlift depends on its make, model, and your home’s layout. Stairlifts come in various shapes and sizes, and the type you select determines the clearance needed at the top and bottom of your stairs for the rail and easy access for users. Compact stairlifts require less room than those with standard dimensions.
Should I Rent or Buy a Stairlift?
If you anticipate needing a stairlift for a short period, renting might be the best option. Renting allows you to pay a manageable monthly fee until you no longer require the stairlift. It’s ideal for temporary needs such as aiding in hospital discharge or accommodating guests with reduced mobility.
For longer-term use, purchasing a stairlift is recommended. Our competitively priced stairlifts provide an opportunity to own one, and our flexible finance options allow you to spread payments interest-free.
Are Reconditioned Stairlifts Less Reliable Than New Stairlifts?
Reconditioned stairlifts are previously used units that have been restored and fully serviced for resale. Despite being pre-owned, they meet rigorous quality and safety standards. Reconditioned stairlifts offer a dependable and smooth ride comparable to a new stairlift, and they often present a more affordable option than purchasing new.
How Much Electricity Do Stairlifts Use?
Stairlifts from MK Stairlifts consume a minimal amount of electricity. On average, a standard stairlift uses about the same amount of electricity as a small television on standby.
How Does a Stairlift Operate?
Stairlifts operate using battery power, ensuring reliability even during power outages. The battery drives a small motor that moves the stairlift along the stairs via gears. Control is managed through user-friendly armrest controls and a remote.

Depending on stairlift availability and location, we have even managed to install stairlifts on the same day. Typically, most stairlift installations from MK Stairlifts are completed within just a few days.
How Long Does Stairlift Installation Take?
Installation of a standard straight stairlift typically takes just under two hours on average. For bespoke or curved stairlifts, installation usually requires approximately half a day.
After installation, our engineers will provide a demonstration to guide you on using your stairlift. We also ensure to tidy up after ourselves and remove any waste packaging.
How User-Friendly is a Stairlift Swivel Seat?
The swivel seat is crafted to enhance the ease and safety of getting on and off your stairlift.
Once your stairlift ride concludes, the swivel seat rotates 90° to face your landing or hallway. This feature enables you to stand up from your stairlift effortlessly, eliminating the need for awkward shuffling or twisting.
Swivel seats are available in manual or automated operation modes for added convenience.
How Long Does It Take for a Stairlift to Ascend?
Stairlifts typically move at a gentle pace, approximately 0.15 meters per second (0.34 mph) or slower. Therefore, an average journey up a straight staircase can take around 30-60 seconds to complete. This low-speed operation ensures a safe and comfortable journey for users.
What Makes Curved Stairlifts More Expensive Than Straight Stairlifts?
Curved stairlifts are generally pricier than straight stairlifts due to their requirement for a custom-made curved track. The additional cost reflects the extra materials, time, and specialized expertise involved in crafting a bespoke track.
Do Stairlifts Include Remote Controls?
Yes, most modern stairlifts are equipped with two standard, user-friendly remote controls. Each remote features a simple push-button design, enabling users to effortlessly operate the stairlift up and down the staircase. In shared stairlift situations, remote controls allow individuals to call the stairlift from either end of the stairs once it’s available for use.
Are There Weight Restrictions for Stairlifts?
Typically, modern standard stairlifts have a maximum weight limit of approximately 18-19 stone (114kg-120kg).
If you require a stairlift with a higher weight capacity, certain models can support up to 25 stone (158kg). Contact our team for more information on these options.

What Occurs During a Power Cut While Using the Stairlift?
Your stairlift is equipped with a standard battery backup. In the event of a power cut, this backup ensures you have enough battery power for a couple of emergency trips until the power is restored or alternative arrangements are made.
What Occurs if an Obstacle Blocks the Stairlift's Path?
Our stairlifts are equipped with sensors that automatically slow down and stop the stairlift if an obstacle is detected on the stairs.
Is It Possible to Shorten a Stairlift?
Shortening a stairlift is feasible, but it should be performed by an experienced and fully qualified stairlift engineer for optimal results.
